Concrete Driveway Replacement

A Portland homeowner's failing driveway — full concrete removal, base prep, forming, and a fresh pour all wrapped up in one week.

01

The Problem

The driveway had been deteriorating for years. The concrete had cracked and settled unevenly, with sections heaving and shifting enough to create a rough, uneven surface that was hard on vehicles and a liability for anyone walking on it. Like a lot of older flatwork in the Portland area, it had been poured directly on native soil with no proper aggregate base underneath — once the ground moved, the concrete had nowhere to go but up and apart. The homeowner had been putting it off, but it had reached the point where patching wasn't going to cut it anymore.

The Work

We broke out and hauled away all of the old concrete on demo day, clearing the full driveway footprint down to subgrade. Over the next two days we prepped the base — excavating to the correct depth, bringing in and compacting crushed rock to give the new slab a stable, well-draining foundation. We set forms to establish the finished grade and slope so water would sheet off the surface and away from the house rather than pooling. On pour day we placed and finished the concrete, cutting control joints at the right spacing to manage any future movement. The result is a slab built the way it should have been the first time.

Work in Progress

Concrete demolition in progress breaking out old driveway slab
Old concrete removed, subgrade exposed and ready for base prep
Crushed rock base installation and compaction
Forming and grading driveway base before concrete pour
Driveway forms set and base compacted, ready for pour
Concrete being placed and finished on pour day

The Result

The homeowner went from a cracked, uneven driveway to a clean, flat, properly drained slab — all in about a week from demo to finished pour. The new base means this one won't heave and crack the way the old one did. It's the kind of job that looks straightforward when it's done, but the prep work underneath is what makes it last.
